Family Friendly Colorado Resort

Monarch is Colorado's Most Family Friendly Ski Resort

When families ski Monarch Mountain, one thing they seem to lose right away is the stress that comes with worrying about the kids, young or old, and what they’re going to need to have the best family ski vacation possible. Our family friendly atmosphere and small town charm make Monarch the perfect destination for winter family fun.

Monarch's trails all start from and lead to the same place: the central base of the resort. This makes it nearly impossible to get lost or stay separated for too long, which helps parents of younger skiers and riders breathe easier than at many of the larger and less kid friendly resorts. Having one central base area makes it simple to drop first timers off for lessons, pick up rentals, and head up to the top for some of the best skiing and riding in the state. Our kid friendly attitude will swipe the worry from you and let you enjoy your day among the powder and trails.

Caterpillar Lift Makes Learning Easy! The Caterpillar Lift Makes Learning Easy!

Getting up on the mountain is very easy for all skiers and riders. Two conveyor lifts, Congo and Safari serve the Children’s Only Learning Area so that the youngest members of your family can learn safely in a fun environment.  A 450 foot long covered conveyor lift: Caterpillar makes it easy for beginner skiers and snowboarders to load and unload the lift.  The clear Plexiglas cover will protect riders from the elements as they go up the mountain.  The Pioneer quad chairlift travels right out of the base area to the top of the mountain accessing beginner and intermediate ski runs.  Two double chairlifts: Breezeway and Garfield take riders from the base of the mountain to beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain. Or you can avoid the base area altogether and take the Panorama chairlift all the way up to the Continental Divide for awesome views in all directions.

Monarch's terrain is varied enough to appeal to skiers and riders at any level, which makes planning a family ski vacation here easy. From fun learning opportunities and easy runs that keep the day fun and kid friendly, to deep powder (Monarch averages over 350 inches of natural snowfall every season) and challenging black runs, to solitary and beautiful tree runs.  Monarch offers it all. Imagine riding on one of our Snowcats up to the Continental Divide, or hiking up there yourself, to experience some of the most beautiful back country powder around.

Monarch's Rental and Lesson Center is separate from, though nearby, the main base lodge, making it convenient for you to get in and out for all your lesson and rental needs. The Rental shop has over 800 pairs of new boots, skis and snowboards so that you can ski or ride on the most modern nicest equipment. High-end demo skis from K2, Salomon, Volkl, Dynastar and snowboards from Never Summer are available for you to try. Reservations is also housed in the same building so you can book your future lessons right there.

A few more reasons that Monarch Mountain is a more family friendly resort is that our mountain rarely has long lift lines, lift tickets are cheap, and you'll be amazed at how many runs you'll have to yourself throughout your visit. Monarch has everything you need to make your visit complete; the Sport Shop carries everything from sunscreen, goggles and helmets to full ski outfits, they even have rental ski suits.

Monarch Mountain has a variety of food outlets to keep your family fed and fueled up for their day. The Sidewinder Restaurant and Saloon offers a great southwest inspired menu and sit down service.  The Gunbarrel Cafeteria has all the family favorites: burgers, pizza, chili, soups, a salad bar and beverages.  Our newly expanded Pioneer Room just off the cafeteria gives you and your family plenty of space to enjoy your lunch (no sack lunches please). Elmo's Bar, located in the Pioneer Room and brand new this year, will be open on weekends and holidays, giving you an option to the Sidewinder Saloon.  At the Java Stop located upstairs in the main base lodge, we proudly serve Starbucks coffee. You can also purchase breakfast items, pastries, hot chocolate and other beverages quickly and conveniently.

monarch family friendly 4Since Monarch is only 2 hours away from Colorado Springs, and 3 hours from Denver, it makes the trip a snap. Our mountain looks over the beautiful and sunny Arkansas River Valley, which makes calling Monarch your family friendly ski resort a no-brainer. Everything else you need for a family ski vacation can be found in any one of the towns in the valley: Salida, Poncha Springs or Buena Vista. Each of these fantastic mountain towns offer great dining, shopping and lodging options - and much more - only minutes away from the base of Monarch Mountain.
